Steve Takes The Tipping Trophy

This year saw the inaugural LQS AFL Footy Tipping Comp take place. It was quite a battle, but only for the minor places as LQS Australia Consultant Steve Lampron skipped out to a healthly lead early on the season and by the final final game in round 22 managed to maintain his winning margin to win over LQS Australia Consultant Anthony Keers (2nd) and LQS Director Daniel Tuffin (3rd). LQS South Africa's Manager, Consulting Services Micheal Seymour and LQS Managing Director Pierre Fourie tied for the dreaded wooden spoon. (Better luck next year boys!)

Congratulations go out to Steve, who not only claimed the largest portion of the prize pool, but more importantly had his name carved into the LQS Cup at position number 1 for 2008.
LQS in the Philippines - Masbate Site Visit May 2008

LQS continues to expand into Asia along with its expanding Australasian client base. LQS Director Daniel Tuffin recently sojourned to the remote island of Masbate, an island province of the Philippines located in the Bicol Region, for CGA Mining Limited as part of their update of the current Mining Reserves for the Masbate Gold Project.

The Masbate Project was originally operated for 14 years (1980 - 1994) by Atlas. The previous operations included open pit and underground mining of oxide, transition and fresh material with subsequent processing using CIL and heap leach processing. A total of 17.4 million tonnes were processed at a grade of 2.12g/t resulting in gold production of 1,078,326 ounces of gold and 944,474 ounces of silver. Overall plant recovery of 86% was achieved during the operating period. It is evident from the records of past production that CIL metallurgical recovery was closely related to the grade of ore mined i.e. increase in grade resulted in increased recovery.

The operation reportedly closed due to the forced closure of the Atlas group operations as a result of falling commodity prices, and the inability of Masbate to cover group overheads from other operations of the company at the time (source - www.cgamining.com)

Time (and gold prices!) have changed, and now CGA Mining Limited have commissioned a mill and are well underway in the their efforts to finalise construction of the new talls dam. Utilising the technical skills of LQS, CGA Mining Limited will soon release an updated Mining Reserve.

The trip was not only fruitful from a mining perspective, but Daniel reported back that the trip and the site contained some of the most breathtaking scenery he'd seen. Once arrived at Masbate airport, only a short flight from Manila, the final step to reach the mine site is to board a 60ft ex-Australian prawn trawler and travel via ocean around the island - a very pleasant and most definitely picturesque way to reach the final destination!

Tenth AusIMM Underground Operators' Conference, April 14-16 2008

Over the period of April 14-16, 2008, LQS Australia's Anthony Keers attended the Tenth AusIMM Underground Operators' Conference in Launceston, Tasmania. The general topic of this years' conference was "Boom and Beyond" paying particular attention to maintaining momentum within the industry as it expands at a rapid rate through improved human resources, updated mining methods and technology and superior planning.

Many of the papers delivered during the course of the conference had wide reaching implications, without bias in terms of geographical location, commodity or mine type. Other papers presented will prove useful during future studies with best practices highlighted, and in some cases lessons learned from previous mistakes.

Outside of the presentation of papers there was ample time to socialise with old acquaintances and to network with potential new contacts from the people on the ground to those in head offices and other consultants.
A number of exhibitors and suppliers were also on hand to gather information from in regards to the latest products and services.

The Conference Dinner was held at the Albert Hall and provided another opportunity to talk with old friends and new in a relaxed atmosphere. All told, the conference was well worth the trip and I'm looking forward to the next installment - Anthony.
